What majestic structures, with the maritime history they represent. Fascinating reading. And such an excellent pasttime, searching the coast for these worn and weaathered sentinels....

You see, I started photographing lighthouses for my mother because she has always liked them. And so it happened that I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend in South Portland Maine at the beginning of fall of 2000. Then on one weekend in September, I drove almost the entire coast with a little map that showed where many were. I found 13 of them. I am still photographing as I find them, and I AM actively seeking them out. Though I must admit, my passion right now is for zoo animals and flowers. I went to Borneo once (July 2004) for a scuba diving vacation and photographed a rumahapi (roo-mah'-ha-pee) on the tiny island of Sipadan. That would be, of course, a Malaysian lighthouse. It is just a skeleton tower, nonetheless, it serves that purpose.

All the lighthouse sites have a web page with at least one image. I will get to the maps one day. When a map does show up, move your cursor up to the title area while the map loads. Then when you can see all of it, drag the mouse over the map and a second map will load showing a closer look at the road detail.

They're listed in the order that I visited them.  If you have followed the progress of this site, you have probably figured out that this has gone a little bit beyond something I do for my mother, now. So I'll keep traveling as long as my job sends me somewhere else. And believe me, more of these wonderful symbols of our maritime history, will fall victim to my cameras. 

I used Microsoft Encarta 2000 for the regional maps. The maps for each lighthouse were obtained from Street Atlas USA software by Delorme. I got factual information from this web site:   National Park Service, and you can look at this Bibliography for the books I used for research. The rest of it comes from my own experience.
