SUMATRAN TIGER
Panthera Tigris Sumatrae
JBC Photography

The Sumatran Tiger
is the smallest of the 5 tiger subspecies. It also has the darkest coat. And,
unfortunately it is nearly extinct with only about 600 remaining alive today.
This species, like the
others, are active hunters at night. They feed on deer and wild pigs, but will
even eat dead flesh - carrion. Tigers are also known to attack young
rhinoceroses and elephants.
This fellow has
a mate at the SF Zoo, but she is often kept isolated in an adjacent enclosure
that has a screened door separating them. He paces a lot back and forth in front
of that door when she is over there, and she will occasionally come up and lick
him through the screen.
